The more I think about my holidays in Portugal the more excited I get! :D
Going to be seeing a LOT of really old friends, spending time with great weather, excellent food.
But best of all… I will get to meet my father for the first time in around 14 years! :)
Talking to my good friend Klarisa tonight about the times back in Portugal when me and the gang used to skateboard and surf by the coast.
We were young, rough and poor. We still managed to have the best of our times even like that.
All we needed was the good weather and great disposition.
The waves, girls and good food helped too.
We started off with our skateboards. Trying to pull crazy tricks and stunts by the fountains outside the casino. It was our playground. Located right in front of Mr. Chico’s Surf & Skateboarding shop.
We were kids, we were bound to get in trouble and get up to things we wouldn’t be too proud of nowadays (some are still caught up in the same old vices) but Mr. Cicho was always like a father figure almost.
While some of them had surfboards I couldn’t afford one so I remember the day I spent talking to Mr. Chico and he told me and Miguel to go to the workshop with him.
Walls, the floor, shelves filled with boards ready to be shaped, designed and finished and he just tells us that we had the talent and needed something to keep practicing so he lets us pick two Surf Boards from the pile of old ones he had there. Boards that were broken, cracked, hard to repair or just very worn out.
I can’t forget that feeling and how grateful I was. My very own Surf Board.
It was incredible!
I cherished that thing like it was a son!
We had no money so obviously we kept the surf boards the whole time.
People tended to get new Surf Boards before Summer or around that time but we didn’t.
Around the Summer time when the weather was getting better we would always take the Surf Boards into his workshop, scrape off the design, polish the board nicely before creating a new one.
They were still our first boards, our babies, except with a brand new look as they were ready for another Summer and another year.
I couldn’t be more grateful for it all and all the perfect times that were had.
What I’d give to go back in time a bit.
Massive thank you to Mr. Chico.
He’s one of the first and most famous shapers in Portugal which kinda makes him famous internationally too to an extent.
A great article and dedication to him here.
